Sodium cyanide (NaCN) remains the most cost-effective reagent for gold extraction worldwide. However, managing cyanide-bearing slurry and supernatant water requires rigorous analytical monitoring to comply with Tanzanian National Environment Management Council (NEMC) regulations and the International Cyanide Management Code.

Understanding Cyanide Speciation

Environmental regulations classify cyanide into three distinct chemical groups:

  • Free Cyanide: Molecular HCN and ionic CN⁻; highly toxic and readily volatile.
  • Weak Acid Dissociable (WAD) Cyanide: Cyanide complexes with copper, zinc, nickel, and cadmium that dissociate at mildly acidic pH (pH 4.5). This is the primary regulatory compliance parameter for wildlife and environmental protection (typically <50 mg/L in TSFs, <0.1 mg/L at discharge points).
  • Total Cyanide (Total CN): Includes stable iron and cobalt cyanide complexes requiring strong acid reflux distillation.
